It was designed to support practitioners to develop better solutions for urban transport systems in order to improve citizens’ mobility. The main objective of Transport Learning was to create knowledge and capacity on sustainable transport policies and measures in municipalities of Europe’s convergence regions.

To build capacity and skills within public administrations and private sector organizations, training events were carried out in 8 European countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain.

The aim was to encourage trainees to develop their own project and put the knowledge gained into practice. The best projects were awarded with the prize of a free study trip to Graz in Austria or Bolzano in Italy, or free entrance to an international transport conference.

All training materials produced during the project are accessible and free for everyone. Universities and other training organizations are encouraged to take up the materials, thus ensuring a long-lasting legacy for the project.

The project followed a clear approach to develop and implement its training and to make the most use its outcomes to ensure a long-term effect:

All work was based on the creation of the training concept and materials tailored to the needs of the training regions

This concept and materials were used to carry out two day long technical training modules

In total, 64 training modules were held over a period of one year

Immediately after each module, the trainees began their practical exercise (mini-project) which allowed them to apply the knowledge gained to their own area of work

All training events consisted of two parts: theoretical and practical training. Even the technical part of the training followed the principles of interactivity. Role-plays, group work, lively discussions and other interactive elements were the key element of the training. The training was facilitated by international experts.

The field of transport and mobility is a very wide one and not every aspect of mobility can be covered in one training course. Therefore, the TRANSPORT LEARNING training defined 8 modules:

Parking space management, access restriction and speed control

Mobility management measures for families, kindergartens and schools

Land use and housing in mobility management

Public transport modelsStreet design, streetscape and traffic calming

Walking and cycling – counselling municipalities

Design and implementation of sustainable mobility campaigns

Communication training

For more information, please visit the Transport Learning website.

Source: http://transportlearning.net/index.php?id=53

Transport Learning was an EU-project, which ran from 2011 to 2013.
