A breakthrough regarding the number of electrical cars that can be connected to the electrical system is expected only around 2020. The three leading players of the market are the USA, China and Europe. Experts anticipate that China could take over the leading role from USA in the industry.

The study envisages two scenarios in case of cars that can be connected to the electrical system in Hungary:

according to a realistic scenario, the number of them could be 52 thousand by 2023.

an optimistic scenario envisages 2.5 times more electrical cars running on the Hungarian roads.

For this purpose, however, a suitable incentive system should be introduced so that people would be more inclined to buy electrical cars, and deployment of charging stations would also be necessary. The study says, that no additional energy generating capacity is required by the electrical cars. The price of the plug-in hybrid and the purely electrical vehicles is still much higher than the price of the traditional vehicles, primarily because of the installed battery. One of the benefits of electrical cars is the reduction of CO2 emission according to the study. This reduction could mean that the country will be able to sell more CO2 quota, which might generate an income of 7 million Euro by 2023, as indicated by calculations.

The frequency of illnesses and fatal consequences would drop as the air pollution is reduced. External costs caused by the noise of traffic on public road could be reduced with 10.5 million Euro by 2023 because of the reduction of noise according to a realistic scenario.

Indirectly, the use of electrical car would lead to a reduction of fuel prices. “In addition to that, their important benefit is that, assuming the presence of a suitable technology (V2G technology), they could act as a distributed storing and system controller by balancing the load on the electrical grid, consume the excessively generated power by power plant that cannot be scheduled easily, and participating in supplying electricity in peak hours” – says the study.

The US government make efforts in order to accomplish the set out goal by 2015, according to which 1 million electrical cars should run on the roads. The best known manufacturer of electrical vehicles in the US is Tesla Motors Inc., producing the Model S which sells at 100 thousand USD. In line with the high price, however, the mileage of Tesla cars is much higher that that of the competitor cars. The market leader in the US was Chevrolet in 2013 based on the number of sold cars. The number of charging stations is also on the increase in the US, 7.8 thousand charging stations were deployed by the end of 2013. This number is still far away from the goal of 14 thousand planned for 2015.

Only 6 thousand electrical vehicles were manufactured in China in 2011, which substantially lags behind the 5 million planned for 2015. The Chinese government provides incentives both to the auto manufacturers and the customers alike. A grant of 10 thousand USD is given in case of each bought car. The infrastructure of charging stations is not established as required by the plan, by which 400 thousand charging stations should be deployed by 2015. Only 16 thousand of them were built until 2011, as shown in the statistics of 2011. The government of China is still trying to enliven the offer and demand alike by providing support.

Europe is the third largest player at the market of electrical cars. EU objectives include the intention to become one of the best in the world in developing and supplying green transport solutions. There are a number of programs, by which EU intends to support and promote the use of electrical cars (Eights Framework Program, Horison 2020 program, etc.), and the customers are being urged by the government by providing grants, like in France, where 5000 EUR is reimbursed from the purchase price, or a 20 % discount is offered, while 2500 EUR is paid back in Switzerland.

There are differences among respective EU ember countries regarding charging stations, the largest number of charging points can be found in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, France and Germany.

The full study can be found here.

Source:http://www.pwc.com/

In a recent study entitled “Where the market of electrical cars is heading?” PWC Hungary analyses the market of electrical cars.
