<\/p>\nTesla Motors Inc. (TSLA), the electric-car maker, starts delivering its luxury sedans in China this month and said the company\u2019s co-founder, billionaire Elon Musk.<\/p>\n
China may become Tesla\u2019s biggest market, with sales in the nation matching the company\u2019s U.S. volume as early as next year, Musk, 42, said earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s China entry is being watched closely by other carmakers that have tried to convince local consumers to buy electric cars. The nation lags behind its target to have 5 million alternative energy-powered vehicles by 2020, due to a lack of charging stations and high costs, even as public concerns over worsening air pollution are mounting.<\/p>\n
Tesla\u2019s rapid charge stations, already in place across the U.S. and being installed in Europe, let a Model S get a 50 percent charge in about 20 minutes. That compares with between six and eight hours to recharge the car\u2019s lithium-ion pack from a 240-volt outlet.<\/p>\n
Local production in the world\u2019s biggest auto market would allow Tesla to sell cars at cheaper prices by avoiding China\u2019s 25 percent import tariff. The Model S, when equipped with an 85 kilowatt-hour battery, will be priced from 734,000 yuan ($118,000) in China.<\/p>\n
Manufacturing in China would require Tesla to team up with a local company and create a joint venture. Tesla hasn\u2019t held any serious partnership discussions yet and it\u2019s unlikely for the company to make an announcement on the matter for at least a year<\/p>\n
Tesla has been taking orders since August and opened an 800-square-meter (8,600 square feet) store in a Beijing shopping mall late last year to showcase its vehicles.<\/p>\n
Tesla moved ahead with its entry into China after losing its general manager for operations there last month. Kingston Chang, who joined Tesla from Volkswagen AG\u2019s Bentley about a year earlier, left for personal reasons.<\/p>\n
